Steel coil transportation has always been a high-risk operation for flatbed trailer drivers. These bulky, heavy metal coils have a smooth round surface, which makes them incredibly easy to roll and slide during travel. Even small speed changes or uneven road surfaces can shift the load, which may lead to trailer tipping and serious traffic incidents. Proper load securing is therefore essential to keep both drivers and road users safe throughout the delivery.

A stable placement is the first line of safety. Many safety issues happen simply because coils are placed directly on the flat trailer floor. Workers should fit reliable support cradles and solid rubber wedges on both sides of every single coil. This simple setup greatly stops sideways rolling. Coils placed upright need firm base support, while horizontally laid coils should be tucked close to the trailer front or other coils, so they cannot slide back and forth when the truck brakes or accelerates.

Never cut corners on strapping and fixing. It is unsafe to fasten multiple coils with one set of straps. Individual binding for each coil is always required. All restraints need enough strength to handle moving forces from turns and bumpy roads. Fitting edge guards is also a smart practical step, stopping sharp steel edges from wearing and snapping the straps mid-journey.

Never skip pre-trip and ongoing checks. Loose blocks and slack straps are common after starting travel. Drivers should spend extra time double-checking all fixations before departure and do quick checks along the way to rule out hidden dangers.
