Safety Measures for Lowboy Trailers Carrying Heavy Machinery

Lowboy trailers are used to haul heavy machinery-things like excavators and bulldozers. These loads are heavy and bulky, and they can shift while moving, so you've got to follow strict safety steps. Before you hit the road, use calibrated scales to check the machinery's weight-don't go over the trailer's GVWR. You'll also need to get any required permits, map out a safe route, and check the trailer thoroughly: look at the frame, tires, brakes, and tie-down points. Make sure your securement gear-grade 70 chains and straps-is in good shape too. When loading, pick a level spot, chock the trailer wheels to keep it from rolling, and take it slow. Either drive the machinery onto an RGN trailer (lower all attachments first, have a spotter guide you, and center the load so weight is even) or use a crane that's rated for the load's weight.

While you're driving, take it easy, stick to the route you planned, and stop every 100 miles or so to check things over. Make sure tie-downs are still tight, tires are in good condition, and there are no hydraulic leaks. If you're hauling an oversized load, use escort vehicles to warn other drivers, and keep in touch with them the whole time. When unloading, again use a level area, chock the wheels, and have a spotter help guide the machinery off the trailer. After you're done, inspect the trailer for any damage, clean up any debris, and put away the securement gear properly. Everyone involved-drivers, loaders, spotters-needs proper training on rules, how to do their jobs safely, and how to handle emergencies. Refresher training now and then is a must to keep everyone safe.
