Saudi Arabia's road authorities, namely the Royal General Authority for Roads (RGA), have put in place strict weight regulations for all dump trailers operating nationwide. These practical rules are designed to protect local road networks, reduce long-term pavement wear and tear, and lower the risk of accidents caused by overloaded heavy vehicles. The rules apply to every dump trailer in active use, whether imported or locally made, covering common industrial uses like construction waste removal, mineral transport and bulk material delivery projects.
A trailer's axle setup is the main factor that decides its legal weight limit in Saudi Arabia. For regular two-axle dump trailers, the maximum allowed gross weight is 21 tons, while three-axle versions can safely operate up to 34 tons. Heavier four-axle trailers, widely used for high-load tasks, are capped at 42 tons, and the largest five-axle models have a maximum weight limit of 45 tons. Aside from total
vehicle weight rules, all trailer types must follow a 11.5-ton single axle load restriction, which helps prevent severe and localized road damage.
Those working in the transportation industry need to clearly tell tare weight apart from gross weight to avoid unnecessary violations. In basic terms, tare weight is how much an empty trailer weighs without any cargo, and this figure must match the official factory specifications and the vehicle's axle load configuration. Any form of overloading will result in fines from road inspectors. Offenders are charged 200 Saudi Riyals for every 100 kilograms of excess weight, with a single violation topping out at 100,000 Riyals.
