How Long Is a Lowbed Trailer?

There's no set length for a lowbed trailer-just like how they can carry different weights, the length depends on how it's built, what you're using it for, and the rules in the area you're hauling in. But there are some standard lengths you'll see all the time in the industry, and it's good to know the difference between the main deck (where your cargo sits) and the total length (including the gooseneck that hooks up to the truck).

First off, the main deck-the part that actually holds your cargo-is what matters most for most people. If you're using a standard lowbed for general construction or moving lighter heavy equipment, the main deck is usually between 16 and 24 feet long (that's about 4.9 to 7.3 meters). That's plenty of space for most small to medium machinery, like compact excavators or loaders.

If you're moving bigger equipment-like full-size excavators, bulldozers, or even small bridge beams-you'll need a longer main deck. These heavy-duty lowbeds usually have main decks between 24 and 32 feet (7.3 to 9.8 meters). Some custom-made ones can be even longer, up to 40 feet (12.2 meters), but those are for special cargo and you'll need a special permit to use them.

Then there's the total length, which includes the gooseneck (the part that connects to the truck) and the main deck. Standard lowbeds with a gooseneck are usually between 35 and 48 feet long (10.7 to 14.6 meters). Again, this can change-longer main decks mean a longer total length, and lots of areas have strict rules on how long the whole rig (truck plus trailer) can be, usually topping out at 53 feet (16.2 meters) in most places.

One thing you shouldn't overlook: local rules make a big difference here. Some areas have stricter length limits, especially in cities or residential neighborhoods, so you'll want to check the local regulations before picking a trailer length. Also, longer trailers need more axles to spread out the weight evenly-that's a big part of keeping things safe while hauling.

To keep it simple: standard lowbed main decks are 16–24 feet, heavy-duty ones are 24–32+ feet, and the total length (with gooseneck) is usually 35–48 feet. The right length just depends on what you're moving, where you're moving it, and the local rules-no need to get a longer one than you need, but you also don't want one that's too short for your cargo.
